Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah

“Newly divorced, Joy Candellaro decides to break from her ordinary life and embark on a holiday adventure. A miraculous twist of fate lands her in the charming Northwest town of Rain Valley, where she meets Daniel O’Shea and his young son, Bobby. Thrown together by chance, these three souls will be touched by the true spirit of Christmas and discover what it means to be a family.”

Cute story. Definitely captures the spirit and magic of Christmas! I probably would have enjoyed it more if I read it around Christmastime. It definitely suspends reality, so keep that in mind if you pick it up!!

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

“In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….”

The author will draw you into this world of Bascom, North Carolina and you won’t want to leave! This is one of my all-time favorite books. Very highly recommended! 5+ stars!!

Tales of a Drama Queen by Lee Nichols

“Elle Medina must be qualified for something other than shopping and causing trouble, but when she moves to Santa Barbara after the disastrous end of her engagement, just what she’s suited for isn’t clear. Bartender? Private Eye? Phone psychic? It seems like everything she tries ends in humiliation or legal action – or both. Her best friend is getting sick of her, her new boyfriend’s a con artist and her creditors are on her trail. So why is this the happiest Elle’s been in years?”
I really wanted to like this book, but I found the main character, Elle, to be annoying. I almost put the book down several times because I was just so irritated with her! I’m glad I finished it, but it wasn’t great for me. The situations she managed to get herself into really suspend reality. They were just too far out there! There were times I was laughing out loud, but, overall, I didn’t care for it.

Shoot the Moon by Billie Letts

“In 1972, windswept DeClare, Oklahoma, was consumed by the murder of a young mother, Gaylene Harjo, and the disappearance of her baby, Nicky Jack. When the child’s pajama bottoms were discovered on the banks of Willow Creek, everyone feared that he, too, had been killed, although his body was never found.

Nearly thirty years later, Nicky Jack mysteriously returns to DeClare, shocking the town and stirring up long-buried memories. But what he discovers about the night he vanished is more astonishing than he or anyone could have imagine. Piece by piece, what emerges is a story of dashed hopes, desperate love, and a secret that still cries out for justice…and redemption.”

Loved this story, although I was a bit disappointed by the ending. I highly recommend it! I will definitely be looking for more books by this author!
