“One afternoon, single mother Sara Weston says that she’s going to the store—and never returns. In her absence, she leaves her teenage son alone with his damaged past and a legacy of secrets.
Keith Weston nearly lost his life in an act of arson. He survived—but with devastating physical and emotional scars. Without his mother, he has no one to help him heal, no money, nothing to live for but the medications that numb his pain. Isolated and angry, his hatred has one tight focus: his half sister, Maggie Lockwood.
Nineteen-year-old Maggie Lockwood spent a year in prison for the acts that led up to the fire. Now she’s back home. But her release cannot free her from the burden of guilt she carries. She grew up with Keith Weston, played with him as a child…and recently learned they share the same father.
Now the person Keith despises most is the closest thing he has to family—until Sara returns. If Sara returns….”
MY REVIEW:
This is a wonderful followup to the characters and stories introduced in BEFORE THE STORM. It left me a bit puzzled on some of the plotlines, though, considering that we are in the times of cell phones and the Internet. With that being said, this is a wonderful story of hope and redemption. The author grabs you from page one and doesn’t let go until the final word! I loved these characters so much that I am hoping for a third book about the Lockwoods! The author creates such a realistic portrayal of each character that I was envisioning this book as a movie or tv show as I read it! Although it probably isn’t necessary, I do recommend reading the first book, BEFORE THE STORM, before reading this one. You will get a better sense of the entire family and delve a bit deeper into the characters presented in the first book. Some of the major plotlines are told from a different perspective in this book, which I loved! It was a really intriguing way of telling the story and it worked really well in these books. Recommended!

Wow! This sounds like an intriguing tale. I will have to check out this series.
Ooh, one of my pet peeves is when the character in the book doesn't know how to use the computer or internet, lol! I'm not sure if that's what you were talking about, but it bugs me when the book and/or characters seem to be technologically behind.
Jenny – it wasn't that the character didn't know HOW to use a cell or the Internet (she did). It's the fact of what she did INSTEAD of using them! I just found it odd!
The comment about the cell phones and Internet was interesting – it reminds me of a conversation my sister and I frequently have in which we discuss all the TV shows/movies/books from 50 years ago that would never work in today's world of instant communication.
I recently purchased this but didn't know that it was a sequel to another story… I liked your review though. I guess I'll just have to buy Before the Storm so that I can read it first.
Great review. I am going to have to look for the first book….
