Traveling through Books…

Do you like to read books that set in a certain city, state, or country?

I love to read books that are set in Maine.  I’ve never been to Maine, but I REALLY want to vacation there someday.  So, anytime I discover a book is set there, it makes me want to read it that much more.  Books like Not My Daughter, The Secret of Joy, and Eternal on the Water are a few that come to mind that are set in Maine.  Can you recommend any others?

I also love reading books set in coastal North Carolina (i.e. Nicholas Sparks).  We have vacationed to the Outer Banks every year for the last 17 years and I just love it there.  I’m not a big “lay on the beach” girl, but I love the sound of the ocean and waves crashing on the shore.  I love the feel of the cool sand on my feet in the evening and watching the moon’s light reflecting off the water.  But, I digress…

Another place that is my dream destination is Ireland.  I haven’t read too many books that are set there, so if you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!

What are your favorite settings in books?  What location would you love to visit?

I actually just had an idea!  Would anyone be interested in a “Traveling Through Tuesday” meme where we would spotlight the setting of the book we are currently reading?

Funny you should mention this particular topic…I recently discovered a love for reading books centered in or around my hometown. It doesn't happen often, but more frequently as I've made a few connections to authors and authors to be from that area….but it draws you even more into the book because you get that little taste of reality since you usually know the area. No suggestions on books that take place in those particular places at this time, but if I run across one, I'll be sure to let you know! The MEME idea sounds interesting, but I think in order for it to work, it might need to be done similar to the "HOP" idea…a main post that you can either link to, or add on to…Happy reading! =0)

Great idea, I would definitely join the meme! I love all books which take place in Scotland or Ireland, love reading about those beautiful and athmospheric green hills! I also love reading chick lits set in London :-)

I love books set in New York City – thankfully, there are quite a few. Books in my hometown Chicago are also of particular interest. I wouldn't have read Richard Powers' Generosity: An Enhancement, except that it took place in Chitown. Great idea for a discussion topic!

I am trying to read books set in my home state of Wisconsin, but the best vacation our family ever had was the week we spent at Caswell Beach N.C. since Caswell is our last name it seemed fitting and I just found the place with an internet search. I would love to retire there. Sorry a little off topic but when you mentioned North Carolina, I had the best memory. Thank you.

I would definitely be interested in a "Traveling Through Tuesday" meme. As far as Ireland books, Maeve Binchy has quite a few books set in Ireland – Tara Road, The Lilac Bus, Circle of Friends, and Heart & Soul.I have to say that I don't necessarily read books just based on their settings, although I do love all the Elin Hilderbrand books which are set in Nantucket.

LOL Jenny! It's funny because I really don't like the city, especially NYC! LOL! It's okay to visit, but I'd never want to live there!

i don't have any personal faves for books set in Ireland, but I'd bet that the Celtic Lady's Reviews would. i myself enjoy reading books with heavy cultural references, like india, china or africa. it's always nice to know that we are all different and yet we are all so very much the same.

I love to read books that take place where I live or have lived. Also books that take place in Ireland, Scotland or England AKA my dream vacation destinations. I'm reading Need at the moment and it takes place in Maine. Love the idea of a Traveling Through Tuesday meme.

I agree that Celtic Lady's Reviews would have some great books set in Ireland. I got some off of her blog just today. I don't choose a book for its particular setting. But, I do enyor it when an author makes me feel like I am there or, makes me want to visit.I think the meme idea is great. I am reading a book right now that would be perfect for that. Good LUckKathy

I love books set in San Francisco – I used to live there and miss it so I like books that bring back the great elements of the city for me.

Olive Kitteridge is set in Maine and was my favorite book that I read in 2009. I recommend it really highly. As for NC, check out Jill McCorkle, Clyde Edgerton, and Fannie Flagg, though most of them don't write about the coastal area particularly – it's a good-sized state after all. Try Ferris Beach by McCorkle.
