This week’s question comes from:
Books Are A Girl’s Best Friend

Do you use a rating system for your reviews and if so, what is it and why?

My answer: Yes, I use a rating system for my reviews. I have struggled with this, though, over the course of my 2 years blogging. During my most recent blog design, my fabulous designer created my current rating system, which a adore (check out my left sidebar). Is it perfect? Not quite, but it works. I love seeing how other people do their rating systems, too. I think this is a great question and I can’t wait to see the responses!
3.  Visit other blogs in the Linky List!  Make new friends!  Follow new book bloggers!  Talk about books!  Rave about authors!  Take the time to make a quality visit!  Check out other posts and content, make a new friend!  Don’t randomly follow someone if you never intend on actually following them!  No spamming please!  (Please do not leave your link and not visit other blogs – it’s just not cool and not in the spirit of the Hop!)

So, have fun HOPPING and enjoy your BOOK PARTY weekend!!!

Author Interview: Harry Dolan

Interview with Harry Dolan, author of BAD THINGS HAPPEN.

Missed my review of this awesome book? Go check out yesterday’s post and then come on back and read the full interview with the author!

First of all, thank you for agreeing to take time out of your busy schedule to stop by Crazy-for-Books today and answer some questions!

Congratulations on your debut novel, BAD THINGS HAPPEN! As soon as I started reading the book, I knew I wanted to try and interview you for my blog. I just fell in love with the novel and with the characters and I’m so thankful that you were able to stop by today!

1. When and why did you begin writing?

I became interested in writing as a teenager, at a time when I was reading a lot of science fiction and fantasy novels: J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov. Back then, when I thought about writing, I thought I would end up writing fantasy, since that was my favorite genre. But as a teenager I never really got beyond the idea stage. The first actual short stories I completed were written in college at Colgate University. At Colgate, I helped edit a literary magazine that published science fiction and fantasy, and my first stories were strange hybrids of fantasy and mystery. They were essentially mystery plots wrapped up in the trappings of fantasy, with swords and wizards, and all the rest.

2. What was the inspiration behind your debut novel BAD THINGS HAPPEN?

By the time I started writing BAD THINGS HAPPEN, I had already completed an earlier novel that remains unpublished. That first book was part crime novel, part romance, part coming-of age story, and it wound up being very long, over 800 pages in manuscript. So when I set out to write BAD THINGS HAPPEN, I wanted to do something more streamlined, more of a straightforward crime novel. The books I most like to read are fast-paced mystery/suspense novels that are driven by a lot of sharp dialogue, so that’s the kind of book I wanted to write. I had the idea for the central character, David Loogan, a man with a dark past that’s hinted at throughout the book, but only fully revealed near the end. And I had a background as a editor to draw on, although my work as an editor bears only the most superficial resemblance to Loogan’s job editing Gray Streets, the mystery magazine featured in the book. But those basic elements were what got the story going, and it grew from there.

3. How long did it take you to write BAD THINGS HAPPEN?

The actual writing took about fourteen or fifteen months, but I had been thinking about the book for several months before that – working on the characters and the storyline.

4. Tell us a little bit about your writing schedule.

I was working as a freelance editor when I wrote BAD THINGS HAPPEN, and I still do some freelance work now, although I’ve been able to cut back quite a bit. So typically I get whatever freelance work I have to do out of the way in the morning, and then devote the rest of the day to the business of writing. I tend to write five days a week, in the afternoon and evening. And usually I revise and rewrite as I go along, so that I write slowly but I produce a strong first draft. Which is not to say that I don’t go back and edit at the end of the process – in some cases quite extensively.

5. David Loogan is an interesting character. He is very mysterious, but very loyal and kind. He also has a violent past that he is trying to forget. He is one of my most favorite characters that I’ve read in quite some time. Tell us a little bit about “the man who calls himself David Loogan”. Is he purely fictionalized or does he take after you or anyone you know? How did you create such a multi-dimensional character?

David Loogan is 38 years old, which is how old I was when I started writing BAD THINGS HAPPEN, and he works as an editor, which is a job I’ve done for most of my adult life. But that’s about the extent of his resemblance to me or to any actual person. As you mention, he has a violent past – specifically, there’s a violent incident in his past that I describe late in the book. And it’s clear that that incident has shaped his character. It has left him at a certain remove from other people. But at the same time, he’s someone who longs for human contact, for friendship. And in fact the friendship that develops between Loogan and Tom Kristoll, the publisher of Gray Streets, is what drives the plot of the novel.

6. BAD THINGS HAPPEN has so many twists and turns in the plot. Did you have to prepare a full outline before you started writing or did you write where your muse took you each day?

I had a fairly detailed outline before I wrote even the first sentence of the book. And by that I mean I had the major plot twists worked out. But of course that leaves plenty of room for day-to-day inspiration. So I was discovering new things every day as I wrote, and the specific scenes came to me gradually. That is, I certainly didn’t know in advance where any particular scene was going to take me.

7. What was the hardest part of writing BAD THINGS HAPPEN? Did you find any part of it particularly challenging?

I find that writing dialogue comes easiest for me, and I sometimes have to labor more over description or exposition. And of course it’s a challenge to keep all the details straight sometimes, especially when you’re dealing with multiple characters and storylines, but that’s where a detailed timeline comes in handy.

8. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about BAD THINGS HAPPEN?

When I wrote the book, I envisioned it as a stand-alone novel, rather than as part of a series. But several people who read the novel early on thought that David Loogan would make a good series character, and I’ve come around to that point of view. If I could change one thing, I might have given more thought at the outset to how the character might develop through a series of books. I could have planted certain ideas in BAD THINGS HAPPEN that might be developed in later books.

9. If you could pick any actor and actress, dead or alive, to play David Loogan and Detective Elizabeth Waishkey in a BAD THINGS HAPPEN movie, who would you pick and why?

I’m terrible at answering this sort of question, but if I had to pick … maybe Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts? I think they’d be good at the kind of sly humor that the roles require.

10. Can you tell us what writing projects you are currently working on?

I’ve just finished writing a sequel to BAD THINGS HAPPEN that features David Loogan, Elizabeth Waishkey, and several minor characters from the first book. I’ve gotten comments from my editor and I’m working on revising the manuscript. The title is VERY BAD MEN.

11. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I read a lot, of course, and I also enjoy hiking and photography.

12. What boo
k are you currently reading?

The King of Lies, by John Hart. I discovered Hart earlier this year, when he won the Edgar award for best novel (for his book The Last Child).

13. Who are your favorite authors?

Some of them are Lawrence Block, Gregory Mcdonald, Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, and Harlan Coben. I also really like Tana French, someone I’ve recently discovered. And of course, I like classic mystery writers like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

14. If you had to interview yourself, what question would you ask and how would you answer it?

I might ask, “How do you hope to get away with writing a mystery series where all the books have the word ‘Bad’ in the title? Won’t that be an irresistible temptation for hostile critics?” Unfortunately, I don’t have a good answer for this question.

15. Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Just that I’m very grateful to all the readers who have taken the time to drop me a note to let me know that they enjoyed BAD THINGS HAPPEN. Writing is a solitary occupation, so it’s always a pleasure to get feedback from readers.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions! I am anxiously awaiting your next novel, which I hear features my favorite character again!! I’m so thrilled! When might we expect to see Mr. Loogan again?

Look for VERY BAD MEN in the summer of 2011.

Thanks Mr. Dolan! And congratulations on the success of your novel! It is well deserved!

Thank you.

Bad Things Happen
The man who calls himself David Loogan is hoping to escape a violent past by living a quiet, anonymous life in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  But when he’s hired as an editor at a mystery magazine, he is drawn into an affair with the sleek blond wife of the publisher, Tom Kristoll – a man who soon turns up dead.

Elizabeth Waishkey is the most talented detective in the Ann Arbor Police Department, but even she doesn’t know if Loogan is a killer or an ally who might help her find the truth.  As more deaths start mounting up – some of them echoing stories published in the magazine – it’s up to Elizabeth to solve both the murders and the mystery of Loogan himself.  (back cover blurb)

Review: Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan

Author:  Harry Dolan
Genre:  Mystery
Publication Date:  July 6, 2010
Publisher:  Berkley Books
ISBN:  978-0425234402
338 pages
Source:  I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.

The shovel has to meet certain requirements.  A pointed blade.  A short handle, to make it maneuverable in a confined space.  He finds what he needs in the gardening section of a vast department store. (pg. 1)

From the first sentence of Bad Things Happen, the reader is drawn into a mystery novel to top all mystery novels – one of the best I’ve ever read, to be perfectly honest!  Who needs the shovel?  What is the shovel for?  Is someone burying a body?  These are the immediate thoughts that run through my mind as I begin reading this book.  I am hooked from the opening paragraph.

But it doesn’t stop there.  No, this story only gets better and better.

The man who calls himself David Loogan is a loner, a man who keeps to himself, a man clouded in mystery.  Loogan is the main character in this novel, a man who is trying to shed a violent past.  He makes questionable decisions, but no one can question his loyalty to his friends.  I have never loved a character in a book more than I love David Loogan.  The development of his character throughout the book was spot on, with the author giving the reader just enough to keep the reader interested, but not giving away too much at any given time.  I loved his dialogue with his friends and with the detective, Elizabeth Waishkey.  I think the author hit a home run with all of the characters in this book, but especially with the man who calls himself David Loogan.

The plot of this book moved along steadily, with many red herrings thrown in to keep the reader guessing.  Nothing seem completely farfetched and I found myself shaking my head a few times and talking to the author out loud – “Mr. Dolan, you’ve really spun quite a tale here, haven’t you?  I think it’s going to go one way and BAM you pull something out there from left field to completely baffle me.”  I had a completely enjoyable experience with this book.  I love that the mystery was not easy to figure out (and I never DID figure it out, by the way!).

This is one of the best mystery novels I have ever read.  Harry Dolan has crafted an intricate plot with so many twists and turns, you will question every character, every situation, every line of dialogue, looking for hidden meaning and motive.  That is what a great mystery novel is all about.  I love finding a debut author whose writing is so engaging, with just the right amount of, well…everything!  Well-developed characters, perfect descriptions, but not too much description that you get bogged down in it, perfect plotting, with lots of twists that keep you guessing, and with an ending that is as unexpected as it is expected.  This one is getting my 5 star Crazy Amazing rating! Definitely get this one ASAP and savor it! Read it slow and enjoy every word on every page! You won’t regret it! Enjoy the ride!

I am thrilled to have the author here tomorrow for an interview, so be sure to stop back and hear what he has to say about himself and his debut novel!

I found the book’s trailer for your enjoyment, too!

Today is the release of Mockingjay! (and it's my Blogiversary!)

Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
So, today is the release of the highly anticipated final installment in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. It’s called Mockingjay, if you haven’t heard about it.  Hehe.  It’s all abuzz on Twitter and blogs alike.  And, yes, I have joined the ranks of being a fan.  I actually resisted for quite some time.  And I honestly don’t know that I would have even read the series were it not for Paperbackswap.  I actually won the book in a swap game I played there in the Games forum.  I was not actively seeking out the first book in the series, The Hunger Games. I had heard so much buzz about it, I decided to just grab it for future reading at some point.  Maybe.  I mean, my TBR pile is well over 700, so books can sit on my shelves for YEARS before I get around to them!

The Hunger GamesSo, in April I participated in my first Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon and everyone there convinced me that I needed to read The Hunger Games.  They told me that once I started I would not be able to put it down.  I resisted and resisted.  The premise of the book was just not attracting me.  I mean – children killing each other in an arena for enjoyment?  Umm.. no thanks.  Dystopian ya fiction?  Meh.  Not really my thing.

I have to say.  If these two things are what’s holding you back – I am here to tell you, don’t let them.  As soon as I started reading this book, I was hooked.  And I am a 33 year old adult woman.  I literally could not put the book down.  I had to know what was going to happen next.  I was immediately drawn into these characters lives.  I loved The Hunger Games so much that I immediately (yes, immediately) RAN to the store and purchased Catching Fire (the second book in the trilogy).  Which sat in my TBR until last week.

Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games)

I didn’t want to be dying of anticipation waiting for Mockingjay, so I had to wait as long as possible to read book 2!  That way I wouldn’t have much of a wait before I could get my hands on book 3, to see how the series wraps up!  So, last week, I finished up Catching Fire – and I loved it just as much as The Hunger Games.

And here we are.  Today is the much awaited release of <
b>Mockingjay.  It downloaded to my Nook at 12:!5am this morning and I read one chapter before I konked out (sorry, definitely not a teenager in that department anymore!).  I can’t wait to get back to it today to see what happens to the fabulous characters in this story.

I wanted to write this post because there are some who are resistant about reading these books because they are YA, or because they are dystopian fiction, or because this or that or whatever your reason is.  I’m just here to say – give it a chance.  I did and I fell in love.  One of my favorite series.  One of my favorite female characters in a book.  EVER.  (No whiny Bellas here!).  So, I encourage you to give it a short and let me know what you think.

Today is my two year blogiversary!  Wow, time sure does fly by, doesn’t it?!  What a ride it has been!  Please, I beg of you – do not go and read the first reviews I ever wrote!  The ones that say:

“Oh my gosh – I loved this book!  You have to read it!  It was so great!”

Yeah, I’ve come a long way!  LOL  I just want to thank everyone who reads my rambling reviews and takes the time to comment.  It really brightens my day.  I love my blog and I love the people who read my blog, so if there’s every anything I can do for YOU, please let me know!

In honor of my blogiversary and to celebrate the Hunger Games trilogy (and those who have read this far!  LOL), I am giving away all 3 books in the Hunger Games series to SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT READ ANY OF THE SERIES YET!  I want to introduce someone to these books who has been iffy about trying them or wants to try them but just hasn’t yet.  Please be honest about this, okay?  I can’t know if you’ve already read all three and just want these for your keeper shelf.  So, I’m asking you to enter on your word.

By filling out this form below you agree and attest that “I have not read any of the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, including the books:  The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.”

Contest is open WORLDWIDE.  I will order the books through Book Depository so if you can receive books from them, you can enter this giveaway!  Note: I reserve the right to order from a cheaper alternative depending on the winner’s location (i.e. if winner lives in US/CAN, I may purchase from Amazon instead).

Please fill out the form below.  One entry per person.  Contest ends on AUGUST 31, 2010.
