Welcome to the NEW Book Blogger Hop!

Are you a book blogger? Are you a reader? Then welcome to the place where all of us connect over the weekend and chat about books!

Background on the Hop
In March of 2010, in response to what I thought was a void in the book blogging community, I started the Book Blogger Hop. I loved all of the #FF tweets on Fridays, where everyone tweets out their favorite people to follow in order to gain new followers and give their friends some exposure. So I thought to myself – “How cool would it be to have something like that where fellow book bloggers could come and find new book blogs to follow, find new books to read, and gain more exposure for our blogs?” This CRAZY idea became the Book Blogger Hop!

The Book Blogger Hop is much more than just a “follow for a follow”. It’s about making connections. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of book bloggers around the world. It can seem like we are blogging in a bubble, always checking out the same blogs over and over again. The Hop is about taking the time to make a quality visit to another blog, getting to know the person who is writing, and seeing if you really *want* to follow that person! I am not a big fan of blindly following other blogs just to increase your follower numbers, because who is to say that the people will come back? Just because they are “following” you doesn’t mean they’re reading your blog. How many times have you “dumped” the messages in your Google Reader account due to the daunting number of messages there are, many from blogs you “had” to follow (in order to participate in a hop, giveaway, etc). I’d much rather have a lower “follower” count and know that these people are following me because they WANT to follow me, not because they HAVE to. I like the knowledge that I’m connecting with people on more than just a “have to” level.

With that said, let’s get some of the nitty-gritty out of the way. You may be asking – what exactly IS a book blogger? Here’s MY take: Do you have a blog? Do you blog about books/authors? Do you write book reviews on your blog? Do you rave about books and authors on your blog? Is your blog content primarily about books? Then you are most likely considered a book blogger!

How it Works

As long as you meet the qualifications of a book blogger, you may add your book blog link into the linky list below. But before you do that, there are a few requirements. Read up, to save yourself a headache with the linky! :)

1. Before you add your link, you must post about the Hop on your blog and link directly back to THIS POST (not just my domain, but the direct post for this Hop). The linky is going to review the link that you enter in your submission, looking for a link to this post on your blog. If it doesn’t find one, your link will not be approved. This is called back linking and I had to institute it because people were taking advantage of the Hop and getting some free advertising without promoting the Hop themselves. You can read more about this here.

2. While you are creating your post, answer the following question (there’s a new prompt each week)!

“Non-book-related this week!! Do you have pets?”

I have 3 dogs – 2 miniature schnauzers (Cody and Tyson) and a spaniel mix (Sadie). They are my furbabies. They are also in my header. :) I’ll try to post real pictures of them when I have more time (I’m heading out for work now!).

3. Now it’s time to enter your blog link into the linky below (after the list of instructions!).

Instructions:

  • Click on: You are next – Click here to enter
  • A new page will open
  • In the “Link Title/Blog Title” box, please enter the NAME OF YOUR BLOG and in parentheses after your blog name, please state the main genre that you review (i.e. Crazy-for-Books (contemp. fiction))
  • In the “Link” box, please put a direct link to your blog hop post
    (i.e. http://crazy-for-books.com/2011/08/book-blogger-hop-819-822.html)
  • There is a note about the Back Link requirement. Please make sure you have linked back to this blog hop post in the post on your blog or your link will not be accepted! Did you read that important note I told you about at the top of the post?
  • Please enter your e-mail address in the box provided in case I need to contact you about your link submission.
  • The list is randomized, so your link will not appear in a specified order. If you are looking for your link, I suggest you do a Ctrl-F on your PC keyboard and type a few letters of your blog name so you can find it easily.

That’s it! Now you can start hopping around, visiting other links in the list, meeting fellow bloggers and chatting about their blogs and books they are reading. If you aren’t a blogger, this is a great opportunity for readers to find new sites to follow and meet some new friends who enjoy reading the same things that they do! I strongly encourage you to take some time to visit these blogs and spend some time with your blog friends. We all work hard on our sites and we enjoy getting company, so let’s read more than just the blog hop post – let’s connect! That’s what the Hop was created for! :) Happy Hopping!

Blog Tour & Revew: The Good Daughters by Joyce Maynard

by Joyce Maynard

Publisher:  HarperCollins

The Good Daughters tells the story of the “birthday sisters” – Ruth Plank and Dana Dickerson.  They were born on the same day, in the same New Hampshire hospital, but are different in every imaginable way.  Ruth is the fifth daughter of a farmer and his wife; Dana is the second child born to an artist and her wayward husband who is always searching for the next big money-maker.  The two share little except Ruth’s mother’s insistence upon keeping in touch, to the amazement of Ruth, who doesn’t understand it.  Through Dana’s many homes in the Middle Atlantic and Northeast, the Planks and Dickersons stay abreast of one another and try to visit when possible.  One perk to their visits is the opportunity for Ruth to see Dana’s older brother, Ray, to whom she has a soul-deep attraction.

The story follows Ruth and Dana from childhood to adulthood; from first love to marriage and, ultimately, divorce; from self-conscious teenagers to confident adults.  We are taken on a journey of each woman’s self-discovery as Ruth and Dana come into her own person, with the sense that they don’t belong in the families they were raised in.   The novel is told in opposing first-person narratives between the two “birthday sisters”.  Ruth and Dana are so different, though, that it is very easy to distinguish between their stories.

It’s pretty clear to the reader what the big secret is from the opening chapters.  The payoff is the journey the characters take in getting to the truth themselves.  But, the journey is long and winding and the payoff, at least for me, left a lot to be desired.  Other than the secret, there is a bit of a twist that comes very late in the novel.  I was waiting for it. You know when a secret is so obvious that you think, “There’s got to be something more here”?  That was why I kept reading.   I was hoping there was something at the end that would knock my socks off and make it worth my while to have read the nearly 300 pages (else I probably would have stopped, to be honest).  I wanted a payoff moment.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get it.  Early on, I had an inkling of the “twist” so when it was revealed, I had no “heart-flutter” moment.  I was a little bummed.

One of the driving forces in the novel is Ruth’s relationship/obsession with Dana’s brother, Ray.  Once you figure out the “big secret”, you immediately start agonizing over this relationship.  Is “the truth” really “the truth”?  You hope it isn’t, but what if it really is?  This was one part of the novel that just left me heartbroken and a little weirded out, to be honest.

In stark contrast is Dana’s relationship with Clarice.  Yes, Dana is a lesbian.  Their relationship is beautifully portrayed and quite moving.  (In the interest of full disclosure, there are some intimate scenes between these two characters).

As Ruth and Dana grow and mature and finally realize the secret, there was no climactic scene.  The last chapter wraps things up in a tidy little bow and I was left with a sense that I didn’t really get anything out of this novel.  To be fair, Joyce Maynard is a very gifted writer and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style.  The characters were just a little flat and didn’t leave much of an impact.  Even though Ruth and Dana are vastly different, their voices felt the same and I never really connected with either one of them.  This is most definitely a character-driven story, but I was expecting a little more from the plot.

Blog Tour & Review: Let’s Take the Long Way Home by Gail Caldwell

Let's Take the Long Way Home

Let’s Take the Long Way Home is a literary gem.  It is the exquisite and beautifully written memoir by Gail Caldwell that recounts her friendship with Caroline Knapp, author of [amazon_link id="0385315546" target="_blank" ]Drinking: A Love Story[/amazon_link]. From the first page, Gail tells us that Caroline has died, although we do not know how or when this happened. Gail begins by taking us on the journey of when her and Knapp met, their friendship blossoming over their mutual love of dogs and rowing on the Charles River. Gail recounts their deep affection for one another that transcends time and space.

The memoir meanders a bit into the past of both women; more so Caldwell than Knapp. Caldwell goes into her past issues with alcoholism, which closely mirror Knapp’s same struggle with the disease (which she explains in her own memoir, referenced above). This is not a chronological memoir; rather memories plucked from their past excursions rowing or playing with their dogs and seamlessly woven into the narrative. Their lives are so similar that they jokingly say that they have the same life.

When we learn of Caroline’s terminal lung cancer diagnosis, their is a deep pain that you can feel in Gail’s soul. She lays her heart bare for the reader, letting us into those quiet places that we normally hide from everyone. Her grief is a testament to the beauty of their friendship. And this book is an amazing representation of the soul-deep connection that friendships can have.

Blog Tour & Review: Too Blessed to be Stressed by Debora Coty

Too Blessed to be Stressed
[amazon_link id="1616263466" target="_blank" ]Too Blessed to be Stressed: Inspiration for Climbing Out of Life’s Stress-Pool[/amazon_link]
by Debora M. Coty
Publication Date:  August 1, 2011
Barbour Books
Source: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my participation in Litfuse Publicity Group’s Virtual Blog Tour. This did not influence my thoughts about the book.

“Too Blessed to be Stressed” is an inspirational book for us ladies who are stuck in life’s rut.  Filled with humorous anecdotes and witty charm, Deb Coty gives us advice from God’s Word and some simple, yet practical tools to help us become less stressed.  This short book is divided into four sections, Time Management, Develop a Sense of Humor, Cultivate Relationships, and Focus on Faith.  Each section has 10 mini-chapters of about 3-5 pages with stories, tips, advice, Bible verses, and reflection questions for you to dig a bit deeper into your own life.  Coty will help you understand that you don’t have to be perfect.  You don’t have to do everything.  And dust really is okay (God created it!).

The author has so many great insights throughout this book.  I will relay one here, but you should just get the book so you can read them all yourself!

Peace is acquired by intentionally handing our heavenly Father our daily annoyances, dilemmas, and burdens one by one, minute by minute.  By giving up the steering wheel.  By opening that station wagon door of trust and climbing in.  By making the choice to relax in the backseat, enjoy the journey, and let Papa drive. (p. 216)

Don’t you love the word picture she paints?  Oh how our lives would be if we could give our cares to God every minute of every day!  I know it’s not that easy – almost impossible really, but God is at the ready, willing to take those burdens for us.  We just have to let him have the driver’s seat!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it for any woman!

“What’s the LONGEST book you’ve ever read?”
(Note: I’m putting one caveat on this question. You aren’t allowed to say the Bible, Torah, Qur’an, or other religious/spiritual text.)

Here’s MY Answer: It’s hard for me to recall what the longest book I’ve read is. I’d probably have to go back to my teen years and one of Stephen King’s tomes that I devoured back then when I had all the time in the world!
