About the Book

Praying the Wisdom of Proverbs into Your Life Every Day

Experience God’s wisdom as never before and find encouragement, peace, answers, and a better life through this devotional prayer book.

Many people read a chapter a day from the book of Proverbs as a regular devotional practice. They consider it their favorite book in the Bible because its daily practical guidance offers tools to make the right choices and have the inner strength to stand against pressure, size up a situation and know how to respond, make fewer careless mistakes, and avoid unnecessary trouble.

In these pages, readers will find a chapter from Proverbs followed by a heartfelt prayer that includes all of the insights from that chapter. In a mere thirty-one days they can pray all of the wisdom of Proverbs for their lives.

My Thoughts

In this 31-day devotional book, John Mason lays out an effective way to pray through the Proverbs. Each day, the proverb is presented in the NASB translation which is then followed by a prayer. This is an easy, but dynamic, way to add value to your study of the Proverbs or just as a supplemental resource for a daily proverb reading. It is a book that can be used over and over again. If you do not prefer the NASB translation, then you can read the day’s proverb out of your own Bible and then go to this book to read John’s prayer. Or you can read the NASB and your preferred translation for deeper meaning and understanding of the text. There are many ways this book can be used, but it is a great resource that I would definitely recommend.

About the Book

The novel begins with an assassination attempt. On a freezing winter’s night Jack Hodges, a little-known U.S. presidential candidate, speaks at a sparsely-attended town hall meeting in Iowa. It is a few weeks before the Iowa caucus, the first contest in the nomination process to be a candidate for President.

Hodges is a charismatic former general with a dedicated team of believers including campaign staffer Mike Sweeney. But the campaign is a disaster. Ignored by the media, his candidacy barely registers in polls. Everyone assumes the established frontrunner, Virginia Governor Harriet Stanton, will easily win.

But that single night in Iowa transforms the race. A female assassin waits for Hodges to take the stage. As he speaks a shot rings out. She misses but the incident propels Hodges – who heroically shield his wife from the gunfire- on to the front pages. Yet no one knows the identity of the shooter. Police arrest a mysterious dark-haired woman but she refuses to say a single word. Her name, age, even her nationality, is a mystery.

Finally people pay attention to the Hodges campaign. Guided by his outspoken and outrageous campaign manager, Dee Babineaux, Hodges becomes a passionate, outsider rebel candidate pitted against Stanton, the lifetime career politician. Crowds now flock to his rallies inspired by his powerful message of hope and change.

But as Hodges’ campaign climbs in the polls, Babineaux realises it is vital to discover the identity of the mysterious woman who tried to kill him. She gives the task to Mike Sweeney, a true believer in Hodges’ cause. He must find out the woman’s name and history before anyone from Stanton’s campaign or the media does. As Sweeney uncovers more and more information, Hodges’ campaign, guided by the ruthless genius of Babineaux, goes from strength to strength. By the time Sweeney finds out the true identity of the would-be assassin, he faces a choice that could effectively determine who could be the next President of America.

Paul Harris, who has spent almost a decade covering American politics for The Observer and The Guardian, uses his own experience of reporting on the campaign trail to shine a light into the too-often murky world of American politics. His real world insights take the reader right into the heart of a fight for the White House.

About the Book:

Book 1 in the Wings of the Nightingale series

Lt. Mellie Blake is looking forward to beginning her training as a flight nurse. She is not looking forward to writing a letter to a man she’s never met–even if it is anonymous and part of a morale-building program. Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer stationed in North Africa, welcomes the idea of an anonymous correspondence–he’s been trying to escape his infamous name for years.

As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage by their pasts?

Combining a flair for romance with excellent research and attention to detail, Sarah Sundin vividly brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing–and true love.

Book Review: Following Atticus by Tom Ryan

Following Atticus: Forty-eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship (P.S.)
by Tom Ryan
Publication Date: August 7, 2012
Publisher: William Morrow
Source: Free copy for review from TLC Book Tours

After a close friend died of cancer, middle-aged, overweight, acrophobic newspaperman Tom Ryan decided to pay tribute to her in a most unorthodox manner. Ryan and his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, would attempt to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire’s four thousand- foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity. It was an adventure of a lifetime, leading them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. At the heart of the amazing journey was the extraordinary relationship they shared, one that blurred the line between man and dog.

Following Atticus is an unforgettable true saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, as one remarkable animal opens the eyes and heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman to the world’s beauty and its possibilities.

My Thoughts

As soon as I saw the cover of this book, I knew I had to read it. I have two miniature schnauzers so I knew this would be a very special book.

And I was not disappointed.

Tom Ryan is a journalist who publishes his own newspaper, The Undertoad, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He uncovers all the secrets of Newburyport, naming names, getting to the heart of the politics behind every story and printing everything he discovers, despite enormous pressure not to do so. But, even while he says he is fulfilled in his work, he was not fulfilled in his life. Something was missing.

It took a little dog to help him find it.

Atticus Maxwell Finch.

Atticus and Tom

From the beginning, there is something special about Atticus. Tom’s trials through puppyhood are hilarious, and as Atticus grows up, he becomes his own unique being. When Tom’s brother invites him and Atticus on a hike, Tom accepts, hoping to draw closer to his family. That hike changes Tom and he sees something in Atticus  - “It was as if he were made for the mountains” (pg. 49). They begin climbing other peaks, embarking on a quest of self-discovery. Something changes in Tom and Atticus when they are climbing the mountains. Life changes. Spiritual realizations emerge. The busyness that consumes daily life goes away and it is just about a man and a little dog, who leads the way for Tom.

When Tom’s friend succumbs to cancer, Tom and Atticus attempt to do something that’s rarely been done – climb all 48 of New Hampshire’s 4,000 foot peaks TWICE in one winter while raising money for charity. This is a feat that will test Tom to the limits of his physical health. And the mountains have much in store for Tom and Atticus.

This book captivated me. Each trek up the mountain, I could picture little Atticus marching proudly, showing Tom the way. It also made me think of my own schnauzers and the pretty mundane lives they have lived! :) This book is ultimately about a man who is looking for meaning and purpose in his life. And he discovered it in a most unusual place – through a relationship with Atticus M. Finch and by trekking the 4,000 foot mountains of New Hampshire.

Book Review: The Choice by Robert Whitlow

The Choice
by Robert Whitlow
Publication Date: August 7, 2012
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Source: I received a free copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for my participation in a blog tour

The Choice is my first read by Robert Whitlow and I am impressed. The storyline captivated me from the first pages. I actually stayed up until the early hours of the night to read through Part I (approx. 150 pages) in one sitting! I truly did not want to put the book down. The author captures the voice of the female protagonist beautifully. She comes to life on the pages.

The novel opens in 1974 when 17 year old cheerleader, Sandy Lincoln, discovers she is pregnant with the popular football player’s baby. Sandy must make the agonizing choice whether to keep the baby, have an abortion, or give the baby up for adoption. The choice Sandy makes changes the course of her life forever.

Thirty-four years later, Sandy is a schoolteacher at the local high school. She comes into contact with a pregnant student who is facing an agonizing choice about her own pregnancy. Although the circumstances are different, Sandy has the opportunity to help this teenager in a way that was not available to her so long ago. She is also forced to confront many long buried feelings regarding her own pregnancy and the resulting outcome.

The Choice is full of many twists and turns. The plot is a bit far-fetched, but taking the story for what it is, I highly enjoyed it. The obvious theme running throughout the novel is that of choice. Each choice we make will affect not only our life, but the lives of those around us. And each choice has the potential to come back to us many years later, for good or for bad.

Highly Recommended.
